‘Let’s Read’ To-Read List
Let's assume I can get through my Let's Read of my current book (and that it doesn't burn me out so badly that I hunt down LeVar Burton and shove a picture book up his ass). I'm going to need more books on which to write commentary.
Guidelines
- No children's books. YA is possible.
- I have to have never read the book before.
- I have to have not yet formed an opinion on the book or author (probably no Dan Brown).
- It has to be something that hasn't been widely trashed already (no Eragon or Twilight).
- Any genre is fine.
- Books with a huge following and great popularity are possible but discouraged.
- Nothing blatantly bad, such as Danielle Steel romance novels. The concept is that this is a book I could like, but am surprised to find is terrible. For example: Heir to the Empire came highly recommended, and I'd always wanted to read a Star Wars extended universe book. That it turned out so terrible was a genuine shock to me.
- As Spoony once said, there are some sacred cows. I'd prefer not to do anything with a huge fandom.
- I reserve the right to refuse to consider a book simply because I refuse to read it.
With those guidelines in mind, please suggest books in the comments and vote below. I've enabled voting on multiple items, so feel free to bump up several; if I continue to do this series in the future, I'll need plenty of suggestions.
At the end of the current Let's Read, the moment I end the book itself, I will visit the poll and note the current winner. In case of a tie, I will hold a run-off vote in the IRC channel. The winning entry will be removed from the poll and become the subject of my next Let's Read. The poll will continue in order to find the next entry in the series.

Sabriel by Garth Nix

‘Sabriel’ by Garth Nix is good. ‘Lirael’, its sequel, is good, too. ‘Abhorsen’ is the third and it’s great. I’d highly recommend reading ‘Sabriel’ first. It’ll give you a feel for the world as a whole.

The Golden Compass is… not bad… I won’t say it’s great because it isn’t, but it has it’s own charm. I mean just try and read it without wishing you could have a daemon of your own, and the Panzerbjørn are awesome (ARMOURED BEARS FTW). There are parts of it where you’ll want to sprout an extra arm or three for extra facepalm-y goodness but for the most part it is a reasonably enjoyable book.
The sequels… well… read the first book just so you can do a ‘Let’s Read’ of THEM. You won’t [BLATANT LIES] regret it.

I can never read any series that includes a book called “Abhorsen” because it reminds me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abseiling .. with horses.
