Part 4 of 4 of Why and How I Teach Myself

So you’ve got some spare time, or it’s the hour you previously set aside for learning. You look at your list of chosen subjects, decide on one to study . . . and then what?

Once you’ve gathered your resources, you need to figure out how you’re going to use them. First of all, you need to define a ‘unit’ of activity in each subject. For example:

Math: twenty arithmetic problems
English: five minutes of reading a novel, or write a short summary of what you’ve read so far
History: read one sub-chapter of your history book, and answer the review questions if you reach the end of a chapter
Vocabulary: take a short quiz

Once you’ve defined units, you can write out basic ‘lesson plans’ to break up your resources into chunks. Laying this out in advance will help your studies go smoothly. Here’s a sample lesson plan from A Beka Books.
